If, like me, you find out one day that someone special in your life has cancer, but you have no idea what to say to them, this poem may be a good place to start.

“You are not alone”

I cannot stop your aching bones,

but I will carry you when they hurt.

I cannot bring back your taste,

but I’ll cook your favourite when it returns.

I cannot feel the chemo in your blood,

but I will hold you through the pain.

I cannot stop your hair from falling out,

but I will love you all the same.

I cannot move your mountain,

but I’ll climb it with you in the rain.

When all else fails,

and the darkness starts to win,

just remember this:

you are not alone.
